Artist StatementI was diagnosed with diabetes in 1975. Through my youth, I pushed the thought of complications far from my mind. I have only recently confronted the reality of a shortened life expectancy. Metalsmithing, particularly the use of computer aided design, is my passion; caring for my health has now become a passion as well.
These pieces represent both my frustrations and hopes of living better with diabetes. The modern technique of CAD is the perfect medium to explore future developments. Since the discovery of insulin, everything from the syringes to packaging has become modernized, sophisticated and disposable. Today we have insulin pumps, glucose monitoring systems, and an artificial pancreas is being realized. At the height of computer aided design and the proliferation of pharmaceutical discovery we can predict that biomedical tissues shall be a material of choice for artists: these pieces mark the beginning of a burgeoning body of work.
