Bracelets, Bangles and Cuffs: 1948-2024

My Islet bracelet is featured in Bracelets, Bangles, and Cuffs: 1948–2024, an exhibition curated by Helen W. Drutt English that celebrates the rich diversity of artists working within the timeless form of the bracelet. With over 90 works by international makers, the exhibition explores the cultural, political, and deeply personal meanings embedded in this intimate object, showcasing traditional metalsmithing techniques alongside experimental and contemporary processes. I'm honored to be part of this lineage and to have my Islet Series included as an example of how technology and lived experience can expand the boundaries of jewelry.

The Islet bracelet series consists of twenty unique pieces created using real-time blood glucose data collected through my continuous glucose monitor (CGM). That data, captured over three hours, is streamed into 3D modeling software, where it begins to take form. The resulting designs are shaped by my body's biological fluctuations, translating invisible biometric information into tactile, wearable sculpture.

Each bracelet incorporates a hexagonal “honeycomb” motif, a reference to the literal meaning of “Diabetes Mellitus”—“siphon honey.” For me, that structure symbolizes both the cellular impact of the disease and the beauty and complexity that can emerge from it. The pieces are 3D-printed layer by layer, and removing them from the printer feels like unearthing an artifact—a slow, careful act of revelation. That process mirrors the larger intention behind the series: to make the intangible visible, and to turn data and diagnosis into form, pattern, and meaning
