In the late ’90s and early 2000s, as I struggled to define my artistic focus, I turned to Frank Netter’s medical illustration images that taught generations of students to “see” inside the body without ever cutting it open. As a diabetic, I needed to understand exactly how my pancreas failed me, so I visualized and “mapped” its malfunction the way Netter mapped healthy anatomy. I learned the medical language of islet cells and insulin production, then translated those invisible processes into miniature, wearable forms. By shrinking organ-scale activity to the scale of jewelry, I made the body’s internal breakdown tangible and brought it out into the open.
